Wigs: From taboo to trend

We love to collect a publication from El País in which it captures how the use of wigs is finally normalized, going from a taboo to become a fashion accessory used by everyone, whether you have hair or not.

"The naturalness with which artists and influencers have begun to recognize its use, both for health and aesthetic pleasure, has resulted in a definitive embrace to this hair complement that takes center stage on the internet and on the catwalk.

Beth Ditto (Gossip) taking off his wig in the middle of the performance before the mad cool audience to the voice of "I'm roasting alive!". And Cardi B doing the same at the Wireless Festival in London, going a step further and throwing it to the public and then turning to Instagram with a post asking her back: "I let myself go". These two recent wig reveals (the gesture of taking off your wig dramatically and leaving yourself exposed) confirm more than just a trend that was already intuited. Wigs are worn and their use takes on new meanings. They have less and less to do with hiding, moving away from the taboo of a function linked to disguising hair problems or stigmatized hair types such as Afro, becoming one more accessory to take into account in beauty routines and even a new status symbol.

Its origin dates back to the Egyptians, but wigs have reached our most recent imaginary in several ways. Through black women, who have worn them for centuries, as well as the extensions or turbans with which they have covered their hair oppressed because they were considered to "preserve public morals" by not showing it. Persisting the stigma that Afro hair is less professional, which even from media and advertising is manipulated to make it look more Eurocentric. Through artists, such as Cher, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry or many drag Queens, who have used them as iconic expressive elements in their performances. We have seen them (unknowingly) actresses and actors on the red carpet and events, creating false expectations about an image that is not real. And also with that same desire not to make it evident that they are wearing, they have been taken by people with alopecia or diseases whose treatments, such as chemotherapy, have made them lose hair. But the conversation has changed and now, as the aforementioned data shows, we talk about wigs without shame, with pride and considering it more as an everyday option.

Keira Knightley he publicly recounted his experience wearing them for five years while healing his hair after subjecting it to so many changes and treatments for his profession. In Spain, the actress Najwa Nimri He has also spoken openly about his often use of wigs, in an interview with Smoda he explained that he suffered from trichotemnomania, "obsession with shaving his hair", and that he often pulls wigs for events and to build his characters. All these gestures have helped to normalize them, but ¿who has made them fashionable?

Kylie Jenner she thinks she herself. The little girl of the Kardashian clan said so in an interview with Marie Claire: “I started the wig thing , referencing the first of all his appearances with colorful wigs in which he wore an aquamarine blue color designed by Tokyo Styles, his hair stylist who now also makes them for artists such as Cardi B, valued at $3,000.

Others such as Shay Ashual, one of the creators of the most sought-after wigs, they believe that the merit has it Beyoncé. «She made it acceptable to wear wigs openly, and created the demand for front-lace wigs among particular consumers, that used to be used mainly in cinema and theatre. Wig companies saw this as an opportunity to join the game and reach the mainstream," she told Vogue UK. According to her own acknowledged that year she has a collection of more than 30 and the total value of them, according to media and experts speculate, could be around one million dollars.

More in line with the style of Kylie Jenner's is manifested trend on Instagram. Between the fun and the idea of appearing in each post with a completely new image (different styling, makeup and color and haircut) that seems so typical of the era of digital immediacy and the fight for 'likes'.

Just dive into the label ‘#wigs‘ to observe the changing colors: from pastel tones, whites that would need an impossible discoloration, unicorn effect hair or solid neon colors like those used by the youtuber and instagramer Amanda Eising (over a million followers), clone to Kylie Jenner. "The effect of celebrities like the Kardashians, who wear wigs openly, has translated into an increase in consumers who want to wear them for fun, to change their appearance for an event or just for a night out." summarized from HotHair, distributor of wigs and hair accessories ,to The Guardian.

In Spain the trend is not so widespread but it has another famous defender following the American example. The singer Soraya Arnelas he has acknowledged in several interviews and also through his networks that he has a collection of more than 25 copies. «I'm still surprised that the vast majority of people find it weird to wear wigs. Our lifelong artists have used them, the American ones we always use as an example use them every day. But if we use them the Spanish ones... Wigs save us time and money, we also make those who unfortunately wear them for health reasons see it more normalized», explained with a promotional publication of a Spanish wig and extension firm.

¿Wigs will be consolidated as a new favorite object of desire of beauty addicts?"
